I recently came across this picture again and was reminded of a great event that I went to with colleagues last fall.

The speaking tour Together featured Abby Wambach (US Women's soccer star, Olympian, one-time Portland resident) and was what I’d call a feel-good, inspirational event with some interesting writing, reflecting and breathing exercises thrown in. It was funny and charming and most importantly to me, a great evening out with some wonderful people. Hands down, the highlight was my brief conversation with Abby.

She was walking down the aisle during a break and I saw an opportunity to introduce myself and my group. My recollection was that I told her that I would be starting an investment advisory firm soon. My passion was to reach those who were intimidated and turned-off by the traditional money managers. I saw a need for smart, direct, easy-to-follow advice that was authentic and personal.

Abby was enthusiastic about the idea and immediately recalled a recent conversation. A friend in the midst of a divorce asked Abby who could help her with her finances. “I don’t know anyone” is how Abby responded. That completely surprised me. Even Abby, a world class athlete and someone with certainly lots of valuable connections, did not believe that she knew anyone that her friend could turn to for advice and guidance.

And so here I am, with over 20 years of relevant industry experience, on a thrilling mission to make sure that those who need a conversation around investment advice and a step-by-step plan for their financial life, does not have to say “I don’t know anyone!"
